Fiber Optic Attenuator

When light enters from one end of an optical fiber and exits from the other end, the intensity of the light decreases. This means that after the optical signal propagates through the fiber, the optical energy is partially attenuated. This means that there is some substance in the fiber or for some reason that blocks the passage of the light signal.

Classification of Fiber Optic Attenuator

Fiber optic attenuators can be classified into these types:

SC attenuator

It is a fixed type of optical attenuator, normally 5db attenuator is with 5db attenuator optical fiber and is applied to the SC fiber interface. It includes single-mode attenuator and multimode attenuator types. The only difference in these is color; otherwise, the attenuator fiber and other materials are the same.

LC upc attenuator

It is also an example of a fixed type of optical attenuator and is used explicitly in LC optical interfaces. It is also divided into two types – Single-mode LC attenuator and Multimode LC attenuator.

In-line fiber optic attenuator

In-line fiber optic attenuator is built to meet your low reflection attenuation requirements.

FC attenuator

Like SM and FC attenuator types, the FC attenuator is also a fixed optical attenuator mainly applied to the FC interface. It is also available in two modes: single-mode fiber attenuator and multimode. It uses the same attenuator fiber as the SC attenuator.

ST attenuator

Another type of fixed optical attenuator is the ST attenuator which is applied to ST optical fiber interface.

Other Types of attenuators are– MT attenuator, E2000 attenuator, SC male to SC female fixed optical attenuator, etc. You can easily find information about these on our website.

The Function of An Optic Fiber Attenuator

In common parlance, attenuators are used to reduce the energy of optical signals to get the desired waveform. It is like modifying the signal strength as per the requirement of any particular device or equipment. But, Why is it necessary to use an attenuator?

Well, the intensity of optical signals received by an optical device has to be within a specific range. If the signal strength is too strong or too weak, either the machine will not work correctly, or it will jeopardize the device’s health. In this case, an optical fiber attenuator like an SM attenuator or LC attenuator can reduce the optical signal’s strength and attenuate the input optical signal. This mechanism avoids distortion of the optical receiver.

How does the optical fiber attenuator reduce the optical power?

It employs principles of optics here, such as absorption, reflection, diffusion, scattering, deflection, diffraction, and dispersion of the received optical signal. To absorb the optical signal, set the optical fiber attenuator to a particular wavelength range that can absorb the light energy. Within this range, the attenuator will not reflect the light and thus, reduces the unnecessary echo reflection. This is how optical power attenuation is done.

What does a fiber attenuator do?

Fiber attenuator can reduce optical power through absorption, reflection, diffusion, scattering, deflection, diffraction, dispersion of optical signals. For example, for the absorption of optical signals, the optical fiber attenuator is set to a working wavelength range that can absorb light energy. Within this range, it does not reflect light and reduces unnecessary echo reflections. In this way, the attenuation effect of optical power is achieved.

Does fiber optic suffer from attenuation?

Yes, it reduce optic power to protect the optic machine.

How do you overcome optical fiber attenuation?

1. There are too many connectors on the line, and it is necessary to replace the cables at the dense connectors generated by the emergency repair.

2. The connection quality is not good, and the joints need to be rectified.

3. Check whether the light decay is added.

4. Check whether the pigtail has small bends or back buckles.

5. Check whether the loose tube at the upper plate of the ODF splice tray has a dead point.

How do you overcome attenuation?

If the optical fiber has a large light attenuation, it is necessary to check whether there is an excessively bent place in the middle, whether there is damage, and whether there is a problem with the joint. If the problem can be found, cut it and re-weld.If it is the quality of the whole fiber, it needs to be replaced.
